Volochysk (Ukrainian: Âîëî÷èñüê, translit., Volochys’k) is a town located on the left bank of the Zbruch River in Khmelnytskyi oblast (province) of western Ukraine. It is the administrative center of Volochyskyi rayon (district).
Geographical coordinates: 49°32' N 26°10' E.
According to the 2001 census, the estimated population of the town is 20 958 people.
Volochysk is an important transport centre. Railroads and roads of national and European importance go through the town. One of them is European route E50, which begins in Brest, France and ends in Makhachkala, Russia.
Volochysk railway station is situated 62 km from Khmelnytsky on Hrechany-Ternopil branch.
Volochysk is first mentioned as “Volochyshche” in Podil statement of Zbarazh princes dated 9th of July 1463.
Throughout its history, the name of the town was also spelled as “Woloczyska” (in Polish) and “Volochisk” (in Russian).
Volochysk gained its official status as town in 1970.
